One of the themes of this book is society and social classes. It is presented in this book in a few ways. Social classes are categorized by low, middle, and high. Lower class is poor or homeless, middle is what most people are today (not poor but not rich), and high is people that are rich. We believe that H.G. Wells thought that there would be distinguished social classes in the future. Social classes are shown in this book by the Eloi, Morlocks, and the ways that they are linked together.
One evolution of humans are the Eloi. They are the lower or middle class. They think that they are free and live their lives on their own, but thay are really being controlled by the Morlocks (much like the working class today). People today in the working class really are just working for the upperclass. The Eloi work hard only to be taken ny the Morlocks. The Eloi have extravagent lving; "the building had a huge entry, and was altogether of colassal dimensions." They live a great life only to be killed. The Eloi aren't smart enough to realize what is happening to them. They are always happy. "Then came one laughing towards me, carrying a chain of beautiful flowers."
"A pair of eyes, luminous by the reflection against the daylight without, was watching me out of the darkness. I touched something soft, then something white ran past me." It was an ape-like creature; a Morlock. The Morlocks were dull white, had strange greyish-red eyes, and flaxen hair on its head and back. The Morlocks are considered to be the upper-class people, as the Eloi are lower-class. They only come out in the dark. "I wondered vaguely what foul villainy it might be that the Morlocks did under the new moon." At this time in the book, the Time Traveller realizes that the Morlocks eat the Eloi.
There are both upper and lower classes in this book. " It seemed clear as daylight to me that the gradual widening of the present merely temporary and social difference between the Capitalist and the Labourer was the key to the whole position." The morlocks were like the Capitalists or upper class. The Eloi were like the Labourers or lower class. "These eloi were mere fatted cattle, which the ant-like morlocks preserved and preyed upon." The Eloi worked hard to survive. They were basically the food of the Morlocks. It is a lot loke how things are today.
In the book, man evolved into two completely different species. They are so different from the species they evolved from, yet they are exactly the same. Social classes have stayed the same. There is the working class or middle, and there is the upper class. The working class feels trapped just like the Eloi because the epper class, the Morlocks, are constantly acting like they are better. The Eloi cannot escape the Morlocks torture or what class they are classified as.
